"Stop Killing Games!" campaign

We normally don't do this in our little Far Cry universe, but this cause definitely seems worth it to bring it up here:

If you are from a country in the EU, you could change the course of future video game publishing.

As we all have to realise, we are living in a world where ownership is more and more replaced by the concept of subscriptions and licensing. This is affecting both real-life products as well as software. We often do not actually own the software products we "purchase" anymore, we are merely granted a license to use them until the developer or publisher decides to shut them down altogether. This is also creeping into the gaming world and into online games in particular where publishers can simply stop the services and turn your purchase into a total write-off from one day to another.

Activists have put together an initiative to hold publishers accountable and try to force them to either continue supporting the games that they sold you or at least have them provide reasonable alternatives so that you can continue to play the games that you have paid for.

Please have a look at the campaign page...

If you already have a digital signature ID it is a matter of seconds to support this initiative. Please consider doing so and share this information.

:!: :!: Please don't forget: this campaign is still live! :!: :!:

Early on, it didn't look too good as it hovered at around 4-500.000 signatures for quite some time. Fortunately, not least because of the awareness raised by many influential youtubers, it recently picked up momentum and broke the required 1.000.000 barrier.

Hooray? 🤔 Well, yes and no. As it turns out, as is usually the case with EU petitions, many votes will be discarded because of duplicate or invalid signatures. People from outside the European Union like the campaign, but do it a great disservice by voting for it when in fact they are not entitled to do so. Realistically, this initiative would need around 1.5 million votes to be on the safe side and get passed on to EU parliament for review.

So if you are a citizen of an EU country and haven't done so yet, on behalf of everyone who loves video games we would like to ask you to consider signing this petition. It is still open until the end of July. It only takes you a few seconds to cast your vote, but it could globally change the way video games are treated by publishers in the future. You can vote here with your digital citizen ID or your passport/identity card:

One small step for a man, one giant leap...

Just to add some perspective:

Our little Far Cry universe is a good example of how a game that was meant to die in 2015 is still marching on. If back in the day the developer had not included the tools to keep the multiplayer part online by means of community efforts, at this point we'd be left with the single player campaign and that would have been the end of it.

Lots of other games unfortunately don't have a solution like we have. If the publisher pulls the plug on those, they are gone for good. Crazily enough, in some cases this will even affect the single player portion, effectively erasing the game from your library and making all the money you have paid go up in smoke.

So please spread the word, we are all in this together!
